Deodorants and antiperspirants provide odor and sweat protection, helping you stay fresh and confident throughout the day. As the body’s natural cooling mechanism and a detoxifier, sweat is a healthy response to exercise, but deodorants and antiperspirants allow you to avoid its unwanted side effects, like odor and excess moisture. There are multiple application types, including spray, roll-on, gel, solid, and wipes, as well as active and natural options.
To find the best deodorants for men, we first spoke with four board-certified dermatologists to learn more about what key features to look for in a high-quality option. We then tested 59 popular options in The Verywell Testing Lab and at home, wearing them while working out, commuting in hot conditions, and going about our daily routines. We evaluated each one for its efficacy, texture, scent, transfer resistance, and value to find the top options on the market. We also had a certified personal trainer from our Review Board review this article for accuracy.
Verywell Fit FYI
While these deodorants are specifically marketed for men, the ingredients and strength are virtually identical to those of women’s deodorants. Therefore, anyone can benefit from these deodorants, regardless of gender.

Who It’s For
Best for active people who want all-day odor and sweat protection with a clean scent and naturally derived ingredients.
Why We Love It
Every Man Jack’s Antiperspirant + Deodorant earned the top spot in our lineup due to its strong sweat control, skin-friendly formula, and fresh yet subtle scent, keeping us dry and odor-free without leaving a trace. Whether we were pedaling through a heated indoor cycling session, lifting weights, or playing a game of hockey, this option kept us feeling dry and smelling clean, with no need to reapply. We appreciate that this stick applies smoothly and leaves no white streaks, even after intense workouts or long days. We also like the natural ingredients, such as rosemary and thyme oils, which helped soothe our skin and prevent irritation.
Compared to other options, this product feels like the best of both worlds—it delivers clinical-level performance without the overpowering scent or harsh effects typically associated with certain formulas. The Sea Salt scent is light, fresh, and not overly perfumed, making it a great choice for those who also wear cologne or just prefer a more neutral scent profile. It provided reliable odor protection, held up well under pressure, and stayed in place throughout the day. It’s also free from parabens, phthalates, and dyes, and comes in packaging made from 100% recycled materials—a thoughtful bonus.
Potential Flaws
- The texture is a little sticky compared to other sticks, which may not appeal to those who prefer a completely dry glide.
- This option contains aluminum, so it may not be suitable for individuals specifically seeking an aluminum-free formula.

Who It’s For
Best for outdoorsy types who want a naturally-derived deodorant that smells like a forest and holds up in heat and humidity.
Why We Love It
If you’re looking for a natural deodorant that performs like a heavy-hitter, but without aluminum or synthetic additives, Dr. Squatch’s Deodorant hits the sweet spot. We used it during a trip to Cairns, Australia, where it stayed effective for about half a day in near-tropical conditions. It even held up after a sweaty 30-minute evening run, with no need to reapply. In milder temps, its odor-fighting power and sweat resistance remained consistent through indoor cycling, strength training, and HIIT workouts. We appreciate its smooth texture, which glides effortlessly across the skin without clumping or leaving behind any chalky residue.
We love the signature Pine Tar scent, which smells like a freshly rained-on forest—refreshing, woodsy, and not overpowering. The product’s charcoal, arrowroot powder, and postbiotics work together to keep odor under control, while also supporting a healthier armpit microbiome. It didn’t stain clothes or leave marks during even the most intense workouts, which gave us peace of mind whether we were in a tank top or a tee. The value felt strong, too, especially since each stick lasted about two months.
Potential Flaws
- The cap was flimsy and arrived cracked, which could be a concern if you plan to travel with it.
- The scent, while pleasant, may not last a full day for those who prefer a stronger or more lingering fragrance.
Most Valuable Insight
“The strong, refreshing pine tar fragrance is a major plus, and the ease of application is excellent. Unlike some other products, this option causes no skin irritation. Overall, it’s my favorite due to its effective application, appealing scent, and skin-friendly formula.” —Vimal R., Verywell Fit product tester

Why We Love It
Harry’s Extra-Strength Antiperspirant delivers clinical-strength, 24-hour protection that genuinely impressed us during testing. We pushed it to the limit with a three-day no-shower challenge—including a gym session and a nighttime run—and still didn’t detect body odor. It effectively reduced sweat and blocked odor for nearly 72 hours, even during workouts and hot New York City days. We noticed almost no underarm moisture, even while the rest of our body was sweating.
Despite its powerhouse performance, this stick goes on clear and doesn’t transfer to clothing, not even black gym shirts. The scent, called “Stone,” has a clean, lightly sweet, and slightly citrusy freshness that feels universally appealing and is strong enough to mask odor without being cologne-heavy. The formula stays put and continues to work effectively without feeling heavy or sticky, and washes off cleanly in the shower. It’s also sold in a budget-friendly three-pack, making it convenient for anyone who keeps an extra deodorant stick in their gym bag or locker.
Potential Flaws
- The scent dissipated after about 15 minutes of intense exercise. While we could no longer smell the deodorant, we didn’t smell any sweat or body odor.
- The extra-dense texture makes it a bit tougher to apply compared to other sticks; however, this tradeoff comes with significant staying power.

Why We Love It
We love that Degree’s Clinical Strength Deodorant Antiperspirant keeps our underarms dry and smelling fresh for up to 24 hours after exercising. Men’s Deodorants We Also Tested
We tested 59 deodorants and antiperspirants, but only 14 impressed us enough to make our final list of recommendations. While we liked some of these deodorants’ features, they didn’t meet our rigorous testing requirements to be selected as top picks.
- Gillette’s Clinical Advanced Soft Solid features a fresh fragrance that lasts and helps keep body odor at bay. But we found that it has a messy transfer, and it’s not as effective at reducing sweat as the other products we tested.
- Dove’s Men+Care Clinical Deodorant Stick didn’t live up to its clinical strength claim in our testing. While the product’s fragrance smells clean and fresh, our armpits had a noticeable odor after just 15 minutes on the treadmill.
- Old Spice Aluminum Free Krakengard Deodorant impressed us with its bold scent and smooth application during intense workouts, like hockey and cycling. However, the overpowering fragrance and persistently damp gel texture kept it off our top list.
- Dove Men+Care Dry Spray Antiperspirant Deodorant goes on clean with no residue and a refreshing scent. However, its scent faded quickly and required multiple sprays to remain effective during daily activities.

What We’ve Updated
- Since publishing our original fully tested roundup of the best deodorants for men, we tested 24 additional deodorants and antiperspirants in both our Lab and real-world conditions, bringing our total to 59 products tested in total. We evaluated each one for efficacy, scent, texture, transfer resistance, value, and ease of application.
- We’ve reworked four of our top picks based on updated performance results and added four new superlatives to better highlight standout options, including Best Natural, Best Aluminum-Free, and more.
- We also expanded our methodology to include a new testing category—Application—to better reflect user experience with packaging, glide, and formula consistency.
What to Look for When Shopping for Men’s Deodorants
- Ingredients: The most common active ingredient in deodorants and antiperspirants is aluminum, says Garshick. While antiperspirants containing aluminum are considered the most effective at reducing sweat, there are many other options available. Natural ingredients like tea tree oil, baking soda, and activated charcoal are believed to be gentler on the skin, have antibacterial properties, and effectively absorb moisture.
- Application Type: You’ll find several options for applying deodorant, which comes down to personal preference. Options include sprays, roll-ons, gels, solids, invisible solids, and wipes. Select one that suits your needs and lifestyle.
- Strength and Longevity: If you have hyperhidrosis, look for clinical-strength antiperspirants with a high percentage of aluminum, says Penzi. On the other hand, if you have sensitive skin or prefer more natural antibacterial ingredients, look for aluminum-free products. However, natural deodorants and antiperspirants typically don’t provide the same strength and longevity as clinical strength products.

How We Tested the Deodorants for Men
To find the best deodorants for men, we tested 59 options in our Lab and at home, wearing them while working out, commuting, and going about our daily routines. When testing men’s deodorants, we evaluate each option based on the following key criteria.
- Efficacy: To ensure each product effectively curbs sweat and odor, we apply the deodorant to our underarms and engage in heart-rate-elevating activities, including running on a treadmill, fitness walking, and jumping jacks. After our workout, we sniff and feel our armpits, noting any lingering odor or sweat. Then, we continue to wear the product for 24 hours during our daily routine, including additional workouts, and record any noticeable sweat or odor at the end of the day. We prioritize long-lasting deodorants that keep us smelling fresh and reduce or eliminate excess sweat.
- Application: We evaluate the ease and comfort of applying each deodorant, considering its texture, consistency, and packaging design. We look for products that glide on smoothly without tugging or clumping, and we consider whether the formula dispenses evenly, whether it’s a stick, gel, or spray. Packaging matters too: in testing, we note how intuitive and user-friendly the container is, especially for on-the-go use or post-gym reapplication. Deodorants that are quick to apply, mess-free, and well-designed score highest in this category.
- Texture: We look for deodorants that apply smoothly and have a comfortable, non-sticky texture. We prefer formulas that dry quickly, with a matte, non-chalky feel that doesn’t irritate our skin.
- Scent: We evaluate the scent of each deodorant, prioritizing products with a fresh and long-lasting fragrance. We consider whether the scent may be too strong for individuals sensitive to fragrances and note if the scent lasts for a full 24 hours or more.
- Transfer Resistance: Certain deodorants and antiperspirants can combine with sweat and transfer to clothing, potentially creating stubborn stains or leaving white marks on darker clothing. We note whether each product transfers to our clothing after the initial application and a full day of wear. We prioritize men’s deodorants that leave no residue behind.
- Value: To determine the value of each option, we don’t consider its price until after we have evaluated all other key criteria. We prioritize men’s deodorants worth the same or less than what we’d consider paying for them based on their performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is deodorant the same as antiperspirant?
Deodorant and antiperspirant aren’t the same. Deodorant uses antibacterials to rid the skin of the bacteria that cause body odor, much like antibacterial body washes, while antiperspirants use chemicals to plug the endocrine glands and temporarily reduce sweat.
Should I apply deodorants or antiperspirants before bed?
It’s most effective to use an antiperspirant on completely dry skin at night because the sweat glands aren’t active at this time, allowing them to absorb more of the aluminum, says Garshick. Deodorants can be applied in the morning and throughout the day to keep you fresh.
Are products with aluminum safe to use?
There has been some concern about aluminum relating to cancer or other harmful health effects, but there is not enough evidence to suggest an increased risk associated with this ingredient in antiperspirants, says Garshick. While aluminum can irritate sensitive skin, it remains FDA-approved for use in antiperspirants as the primary ingredient for reducing sweat. If you have a chronic health condition, consult your doctor to determine if you should avoid aluminum-based deodorants.
Is spray or stick deodorant better?
Both spray and stick deodorants are effective, but the better option depends on your personal preferences and skin needs. Spray formulations may reduce friction and irritation for individuals with sensitive skin, while sticks offer more targeted application and longer skin contact, which can make them more effective for those who sweat more.
