Nagpur: Historically, diabetes care centres around monitoring blood sugar levels and maintaining medication schedules. However, doctors now say the approach is evolving to address broader impacts of diabetes on physical, mental and emotional health.
“Effective diabetes management today looks at the whole individual, not just the numbers on a glucose meter,” said Dr Sunil Gupta, senior diabetologist. “Mental health, lifestyle, and social factors all play a role in a patient’s overall well-being,” he added.
This year, the theme of World Diabetes Day is “Diabetes and Well-being,” highlighting a progressive shift in diabetes management — from focusing solely on blood sugar control to embracing the broader concept of well-being.
Experts now recognise a strong link between mental health and diabetes, with depression and anxiety more common among those living with the condition. According to clinical dietician Malvvika Fulwani, chronic stress triggers hormonal responses that elevate blood glucose. Additionally, the symptoms of depression and anxiety often interfere with self-care practices essential for diabetes management. “Mental health issues can exacerbate diabetes symptoms and vice versa, creating a vicious cycle,” she said.
To break this cycle, Malvvika advocates mindfulness practices and behavioural therapy. “Meditation and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) can reduce stress and improve patients’ ability to manage their condition, empowering them to make healthier choices,” she said.
In view of World Diabetes Day, the Diabetic Association of India, Nagpur, and the Juvenile Diabetes Parents Association organised an educational programme to raise awareness and provide support for families managing the condition. The event included sessions led by prominent experts who emphasised practical approaches to diabetes management, especially for young patients.
Pediatric endocrinologist Dr Hari Mangtani discussed the importance of insulin dose adjustment, explaining that “fine-tuning insulin doses to individual needs is crucial for optimal blood sugar control and helps prevent the highs and lows that can impact day-to-day well-being.” He stressed that adjustments should always be made based on each patient’s lifestyle, activity levels and diet.
Physician and diabetologist Dr Arjun Deshmukh highlighted best practices for insulin injection techniques. He emphasised that “proper technique can make a significant difference in both comfort and efficacy of insulin administration.” Ensuring that injections are administered correctly can improve absorption and lead to better glucose control.
Dr Sanket Pendse, president of the Juvenile Diabetes Parents Association, underscored the importance of such educational initiatives for families. “Hundreds of parents gained valuable insights into diabetes management,” he said.
