Neston Primary launches mental health course for pupils

Neston Primary School has launched the Hummingbird Project for its Key Stage 2 students.

The six-week program aims to help children develop emotional resilience, boost confidence, and cultivate a positive mindset.

The initiative comes in response to statistics showing one in five UK children suffer from a mental health condition such as anxiety, depression, or an eating disorder.

However, only one in three children receive NHS treatment or care.

The school aims to fill this support gap by providing the Hummingbird Project, designed by MedEquip4Kids.

The course uses evidence-based techniques from positive psychology, guiding students through workshops that promote emotional strength and happiness.

At the end of the program, Neston Primary will receive a mental health resource package to ensure ongoing support for students’ mental well-being.

Headteacher Annabel Elliott said: “We’re thrilled to bring the Hummingbird Project to our school community.

“Supporting our children’s mental health is a priority, and this program provides them with the tools to thrive with positivity and confidence.”

The Hummingbird Project was developed in collaboration with psychologists from the University of Bolton, University of Chester, and the Open University.

It has already been implemented in 56 schools and has benefited more than 6,600 pupils.

The project has resulted in measurable improvements in children’s well-being and reductions in anxiety.

Neston Primary School now hopes to see similar benefits for its students, equipping them with skills to help them grow, connect, and live happier lives.
